A Brief History of the Stanley Cup
The Stanley Cup is a special cup for hockey players. Lord Stanley gave it to the best amateur hockey team in Canada in 1892. Teams competed to win it until 1913 when the NHL made rules about who could win it. The NHL and PCHA were two big leagues that decided who would get the Cup each year.
The NHA was replaced by the NHL. The PCHA stopped in 1924. The NHL took control of the Cup in 1927 and full control in 1947. If the NHL isn’t playing, any league can try to win the Cup but that hasn’t happened yet – even when no champion was chosen during the flu pandemic in 1919.
Top Teams and Famous Players
Long ago in Quebec, people played a lot of hockey. Most of the early teams that won the Stanley Cup were from Montreal. This team was called the Canadiens and they were led by Newsy Lalonde. The Canadiens had lots of French-Canadian players which made them really good. Some famous players include Maurice Richard, Henri Richard, Bernie Geoffrion, Jacques Plante and Jean Beliveau – all these people have their names on the trophy multiple times!
In the NHL, there were only six teams until 1967. James Norris owned three of these teams: Detroit, Chicago and New York. Detroit was his main team and the other two would send players to him. This led to a competition between Detroit, Montreal (who were enemies with Toronto), and Toronto for hockey supremacy. Toronto was winning in the 1940s and early 1960s. Then Detroit did well in the 1950s before Montreal won 5 championships in a row (1956-1960). That is still a record today!
Toronto won the Stanley Cup in 1967. The NHL went from 6 teams to 32 teams, including the Seattle Kraken in 2021. It is harder for one team to keep winning now. Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby were some of the best players ever and they each won two championships.
How to Bet on Hockey
If you like betting on NFL games, you can also bet on who will win the Stanley Cup. You can bet with Bodog Sportsbook and pick which team will win a game. For example:
Colorado Avalanche | –1.5 (+200) | –115 | O 6 (+105) |
Tampa Bay Lightning | +1.5 (–240) | –105 | U 6 (–125) |
Let’s say the Avalanche and Lightning are playing in Game 6 of the 2022 Stanley Cup Final. You can pick one team to win by 1.5 goals or more (this is called the spread or puck line). If you choose the Avalanche, they have to win by at least two goals for you to get money back. If you choose the Lightning, they just need to not lose by two goals or more for you to get money back.
The parentheses number is how much you can win for the puck line. It is called vigorish. With +200 vigorish, Colorado pays $2 for each $1 bet and Tampa Bay pays $100 for every $240 bet. For the moneyline, you are betting who will win the game. Colorado pays out $100 for every $115 wagered and Tampa Bay pays out $100 for every $105 wagered.
Sometimes people bet on how many goals will be scored during a hockey game. In this game, the goal was 6. If they score more than 6, you get $105 for every $100 you bet. You get $100 for every $125 if it is less than 6. If it is exactly 6 goals, then you don’t win or lose money and your money comes back to you. In this case, the team won 2-1 so that meant they scored less than six and people who betted Under won money!
You can bet on things other than who will win the game. For example, you can bet if a certain player will score. You can also visit Bodog’s NHL odds market to bet on teams to win the Stanley Cup at the beginning of every year.

NHL games are official after 55 minutes. All bets include any extra times or shootouts. If there is a shootout, the winning team gets one goal even if they don’t score in the shootout.
What about my third-period wagers?
If you make a bet before the game starts, it will count if the game lasts longer than expected.
They moved the game I’m betting on from one arena to another. What happens?
